Lawrence / Kansas City KOAMeet Your Hosts Lawrence / Kansas City KOA owners Ralph and Kim Newell say they perfectly compliment each other when running their business. Before they purchased their KOA in 2000, Ralph was a facilities director at a college and Kim was an elementary education teacher. "Ralph is the brains of the business, and I am the implementation. He sees the big picture and I see the day-to-day," Kim said. They were looking for a business to buy so they could do something together. They realized their backgrounds and interests were best matched with a camping-type industry. "We were campers and we decided to buy a campground," Kim said. "We didn't know anything about KOA. We were just looking for a park to fix up and put work into it ourselves." Their campground is "absolutely perfect," Kim said. It matches their skill and abilities like a glove, and they are proud of the changes they have made. "We are so proud of the look of our park," Kim said. "The image is something we have created. It touches everything in the park from the store to the main entrance." When they aren't working they travel in their RV and go boating on lakes. They also love a good restaurant. Ralph and Kim had so much fun at the Lawrence KOA they expanded and bought the Branson KOA. With the addition of their second park it was time to hire full time managers for the Lawrence Kansas City KOA. After an extensive search they met and hired Harold and Michele Hays. Park Managers Harold and Michele Hays decided in 2005 it was time to retire, Harold from a lucrative real estate career and Michele from a civil service position in upstate New York. They sold everything they owned and hit the road on a dream adventure as full time RVer's. Staying at numerous KOA's across the country they soon became involved in the workamper program which eventually led them to Lawrence Kansas. Their motto; "Camping is not our lifestyle, its our life." The Newell's and the Hays's both being campers themselves believe customer service is the main focus.
